The Hmong are an ethnic group that are thought to originate from the plains of Tibet and Mongolia, moving southwards through China during the nineteenth century. In present times, they are known to live in the mountains of China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.  Hmong people are known for their colorful handmade outfits and their elaborate embroidery which can be seen in everything from hats, skirts and baby carriers to household items like blankets and bedding as well as used for ceremonial purposes. Traditionally, the preferred fabric had been hemp but Hmong people now also use cotton and synthetic fabrics as the process of making hemp is lengthy. The embroidery consists of bold geometric patterns and designs known for their vibrant and contrasting colors. Different techniques are associated with geographical regions and cultural subdivisions within the global Hmong community. The Hmong do not have a traditional written language and so textiles have become a form of visual expression with the designs being influenced significantly by nature. Today, the practice of embroidery continues to be passed down through generations of Hmong people and remain a defining part of the Hmong culture with batik and embroidery skills being passed down from mother to daughter. In this culture, a girl’s success in getting married will depend upon her skills in these areas where girls may be wed as young as thirteen years of age.
